Conservation – Peninsula Streams Society, Friends of Dominion Brook Park Society

In the midst of our ever-developing world, the beautiful nature around us could so easily fall to the wayside. The Saanich Peninsula Community Foundation recognizes the significance of those working to protect our natural environment though. Volunteer organizations devoted to preserving and restoring our local forests, parks, seas and fresh waters have our full support.

Dominion Brook Park in North Saanich is a beautiful little oasis, which allows locals to feel removed from the bustle of town with lush greenery and a gorgeous ocean view. The Friends of Dominion Brook Park approached us in 2016 with a proposal to stabilize their stream bank, thus investing in the longevity of the park. With our help the stream bank was built up, allowing it to support a walking trail
and improve aesthetics.

A stable environment is dependent on the knowledge and research of organizations like the Peninsula Streams Society. In 2015 they were able to make use of SPCF funds to establish the feasibility of monitoring water quality and habitats in Tsehum Harbour and Roberts Bay. Whilst gathering data they were able to engage other local groups, including Tseycum First Nations and students at Parkland High
School’s Marine Institute.

SPCF worked with the Peninsula Streams Society again in 2016, this time to engage young minds in the significance of what they do. Grade 5 students in five different Saanich Peninsula schools got to join the Peninsula Streams Society on field trips and interactive environmental chemistry lessons.

As much as we love to see vibrant and thriving town centres on the Peninsula, what really makes our home special is its natural landscape. We recognize and acknowledge the sacred land we’re living on, and want to see it protected. If your organization is helping to preserve our land and/or waters, we encourage you to apply for support.
